Parking in downtown Midland is getting easier now that city council has approved valet parking.

According to the Midland Reporter-Telegram, Midland City Council approved leasing out parking spaces on Colorado Street in downtown to be used as valet parking for the businesses in that area.

The parking spaces will be used as a drop off and pick up area and vehicles will be parked in two privately owned parking lots.

Midland Tower owner, Wes Perry, requested leasing the spaces for valet service for the businesses located in his building which includes Opal's Table, Second Story Coworking, and Cancun Grill.

Councilman Scott Dufford supports the valet option because of the limited parking space around the Midland Tower.

“I think it’s worth giving it a shot myself because we definitely need more parking downtown and this is one way to add to that,” Dufford said.

Development services staff requested the denial of the request stating, “The applicant will profit from the use of public, on-street parking. Additionally, this request would remove the use of public, on-street parking in a high-demand area of downtown that has several retail and dining options.”

But the city council approved the request in a 5-2 vote for a period of one year with one council member requesting the applicant follow up with the council about the success of it after the first year.

Midland Valet will charge $7 per car parked according to city documents.

Midland Mayor Patrick Payton stated this would be a test for one year and the council might consider charging an additional fee if the lease is renewed.
