Many ranchers and farmers believe so strongly in this that they have coined the phrase "When cows lie down, rain is coming".  To some, it may be common knowledge, but is there any truth to it?

Why Cows Lie Down

There are many reasons why cows lie in the grass or dirt before a rainstorm comes in.  Some speculate that the animal wants to be closer to the ground to minimize injury due to possibly losing footing and falling.  Some also believe that they do it to keep a dry patch of land underneath them, which gives them a more comfortable place to be while the rain comes into the area.  Some also say that they do this to relax while they enjoy the cool breeze of the rain.

The Truth

There is no direct evidence that cows can predict the weather forecast.  Yes, cows can be sensitive animals and somehow have an inkling of impending rain.  However, humans also have this, and you can usually tell by a change in temperature, barometric pressure in the atmosphere, or even by the overcast skies.
