Halloween is around the corner, and the trunk-or-treat season is in full swing. Over the years, parents have been prompted to take their kids to these events instead of the traditional trick-or-treating from house to house. But is this the right choice?

WHAT IS A TRUNK-OR-TREAT

In case you have been living off the grid and just came back into reality, here is what a trunk-or-treat consists of. Usually, a local organization or business will round up their employees and friends. They then gather in the company's parking lot and set up games and candy bowls in their vehicles' trunks. Most trunk-or-treats are done on the weekends leading up to Halloween, not on its actual day. Parents will then bring their kids to walk to every vehicle to collect the candy and play games. This is supposed to be a non-scary easy way for kids to participate in Halloween activities.

WHAT HALLOWEEN USED TO BE

Parents, do you remember how Halloween was when we were kids? The anticipation of putting on the one costume you bought for Halloween was a great feeling. You gathered up your neighborhood bestie and walked through the surrounding neighborhoods with your parents. Some streets made it a block party and dressed best in their scariest costumes to hand out candy.

WHY KIDS SHOULDN'T TRUNK-OR-TREAT

Are they necessary? Maybe it's the millennial in me but I don't think they are. I feel like trunk-or-treats take away from the true experience of Halloween. Walking from house to house to collect candy is a rewarding feeling plus anything to get the kids outside and moving right!

Halloween should be celebrated on its designated day. I remember seeing posts on Facebook asking other parents what day they are taking their kids trick-or-treating but I thought Halloween was only one day a year.

Over the years fewer houses have given away candy but if you do a little digging you can find many blocks in your town known to give candy. Yes, you might have to make a short drive but it will be worth watching the excitement from the kids walking in a candy-filled neighborhood.

Long story short, Trunk-or-treats waste the same if not more money and time than trick-or-treating, so what's the point?
