Our teen job fair was today and I have to say it made think about my first job.

I think all kids should work through the summer unless they already have a busy schedule. If you’re not teaching your kiddo to work and work hard in the real world you are teaching them to fail and fail hard.

We weren’t by any means rich growing up but my father did pay his bills on time and work hard. He eventually started his own company and made a little more money. Despite that, he never let me feel the privilege of his money because he wanted me to work hard and know the value of a day’s work.

My first job was a cook at McDonalds on Andrews and 42nd in Odessa. I lived on Angus St. in West Odessa. Lol the problem with that was I had no car. After School every day I rode a 10 speed from West Odessa to mid Odessa then did it all again at night when I got off. To make matters worse, the first paycheck I ever received was stolen out of my gym locker during PE. I knew exactly who did it but unfortunately they didn’t get caught. However, that person never earned the value of hard work and as a result is still working the same jobs I was in High School.

Eventually I saved up $300 and bought what is still to date one of the ugliest cars I have ever seen in my life. It was a blue and rust 1982 Toyota Celica. It only had about half of the rear bumper and various dents over the entire body. Also, it overheated every 20 miles, which was ok with me because work was only about 7 miles away. Eventually my father took pity on me and I came home to a 1998 Dodge Dakota which it still to date the most beautiful truck I ever remember seeing. Strangely enough, I was messing around it one day and discovered that someone had removed the seatbelt cover by the door and hid a KoRn CD in it.  . . thus my love of heavy metal was born.

Yes folks, you can in fact love several genres of music. Radio for me was always a way to find something I liked then dig as far underground in that direction as I could. Now not only do I listen to Kendrick and Big Sean but also Immortal Technique and Jedi Mind Tricks too. Not only do I love Rage Against the Machine and Metallica but I also like The Black Dahlia Murder and Mastadon as well. Yes, MASTADON is correctly spelled when referring to the band lol.
