In an announcement made on Thursday, February 20, 2025, TxDOT reported that scammers are targeting Texans.  The way the scam works is simple.  A text message is sent claiming to be from TxTag, the entity that handles Texas State toll charges.  The text claims the victim owes outstanding toll charges and provides a URL to click so that the balance can be paid.  TxDOT made it known that they are aware of the scam and wanted to remind everyone that TxTag does not reach out to customers regarding unpaid charges.  They also mentioned that potential victims to not click on the link sent in the text.  By clicking on the URL your personal information may be compromised- which may be used to steal your identity or steal your money.

Such scams are a classic smishing/phishing ploy that have been used for decades.
