Following a weekend of icy roads and freezing temperatures in the Midland-Odessa area, local school districts continued their response to winter weather as the workweek began.

The National Weather Service issued winter storm alerts for much of West Texas, warning of dangerous ice and sub-freezing conditions that persisted after the initial snowfall and sleet ended over the weekend.

These conditions made travel risky, prompting schools and local governments to take precautionary action earlier this week.

In Ector County, the Ector County Independent School District (ECISD) initially canceled all after-school activities and weekend events due to hazardous winter weather forecasts.

District officials closely monitored conditions throughout the weekend, consulting National Weather Service updates and local emergency teams as temperatures remained near or below freezing.

Essentially, classes were canceled on Monday due to icy roads and possible hazardous conditions.

On Monday afternoon, it was decided that ECISD will also take one more snow day as a precautionary measure to ensure the safety of the children and staff.
