Everyone in West Texas knows that having your fur baby chipped is vital.

You never know when a microchip will come in handy. Strong winds blow open gates and pets escape. As much as Texans love fireworks, they can stress out our fur babies and make them run and hide.

Chips are usually the "in case of emergency" solution but what happens when a microchip and registration company closes but doesn't tell anyone?

Did Save This Life Chip Company Close?

According to USA Today, Save This Life, a Texas-based microchip and registration company, has silently shut down.

On Tuesday the company was listed as inactive according to the Texas Comptroller franchise tax records, leaving pet parents in a panic to find an alternative.

Calls to Save This Life's number will play an out-of-service message. If you email the company, an automatic message will reply with a message from support.

This leaves the big question of: what the next step is now that the company is uncontactable.

What Should Pet Owners Do

Microchip numbers that start with 991 or 900164 are chips that belong to Save This Life but now need to panic pet parents.

You can register your microchips with a new company using the same chip. Chips are radio=frequency identification transponders that carry a unique ID and that number can be registered in more than one database.

The best thing to do is contact your vet to scan your fur baby. They can tell you if you need to re-register your pet's chip. Many microchip companies have free registration.
