If you're living in Midland-Odessa, you've probably wondered if the seafood you get here is somehow "less fresh" because we're so far from the coast.

It's a fair question. After all, the Gulf of Mexico is a long haul from the Permian Basin.

The truth is, there are real challenges when it comes to getting high-quality seafood this far inland.

Do West Texas Natives Know About Delicious Fresh Seafood?

Recently, I asked a native woman from Midland-Odessa on a date.  I really wanted some seafood since it is one of my favorite types of food.

However, I happened to notice that since moving here in January 2025, I haven't really eaten it since moving into the region.

The woman I wanted to take to dinner said she had never tried many of the seafood choices that I hold in high regard.

Fresh Seafood in the Permian Basin

Seafood's perishability means a reliable cold chain, from catch to plate, is key.

Studies show that temperature changes during transport can degrade the fish, speeding the spoilage timeline and possibly even changing texture.  Even small lapses in refrigeration can dramatically reduce freshness.

So, does that mean seafood in Midland-Odessa is always subpar?

Not necessarily, however, it can be more hit or miss than what you’d find near the ocean.

Many retailers work hard with cold-storage logistics, and modern flash-freezing techniques help preserve quality during long trips.

Being far from the ocean presents additional challenges, and some of these costs are transferred to the consumer, affecting both flavor and price.

Even though the ocean may be hundreds of miles away from the Basin, the seafood on your plate still has to undergo a long and delicate journey to reach you.

In short, it is not impossible to find delicious seafood in the Permian Basin, but one must acknowledge the amount of effort it takes to reach West Texas and especially, your plate.
