While the Permian Basin is world-famous for oil production, it also harbors a less glamorous reputation: the relentless allergy season.

The combination of dust, weather conditions, and airborne elements can significantly impact individuals who are sensitive towards it. Furthermore, the presence of dry air can negatively affect sinuses and respiratory health.

What Else Causes Allergies in the Permian Basin?

Aside from the obvious, such as dry air, dust, and weather, there are other aspects in play that cause people to suffer.

Dust storms carry allergens and particulates across vast distances, sometimes from as far away as Oklahoma. These airborne irritants combine with local pollen from trees like mulberry, oak, and cedar, which dominate the region’s allergy profile.

Mulberry season kicks off in February, followed by oak in late March and cedar in early winter. Each tree releases billions of pollen grains, coating everything from cars to patios in a yellow-green haze.

Common and Uncommon Ways to Combat Allergies

A common way that most people cope with allergies is with over-the-counter drugs.  Drugs such as diphenhydramine, the drug found in brands such as Benadryl and Claritin.
