Midland-Odessa Residents Accepting High Winds As Normal Life In Permian Basin
Life in Midland-Odessa can vary depending on your situation and the area you live in. However, one thing remains absolute regardless of where you hang your hat at night- THE WIND!

High winds in West Texas are nothing new, they were around well before Midland-Odessa even existed. As most of us already know, it's the high winds that are the root cause of Haboobs and dust storms. So again, high winds are nothing new to any of us.
Despite that, it seems as if in more recent times, high winds have plagued the Permian Basin more than usual. This year alone, we've seen strong hurricane-like winds on multiple occasions. This would be winds ranging up to or in excess of 75mph, and yet, locals brushed it off as if it were just another Thursday. Granted, it isn't normal for those high winds on the regular; however, they have reached that high in recent times. For example, on March 18, 2025, Midland-Odessa saw winds that reached up to 69.1 mph. Not enough to be considered hurricane-like winds, but pretty close.
Is this going to become more frequent? The Permian Basin sits in an unusual geographical location on the map where the flat terrain combined with weather patterns up North, make our small piece of Texas ideal for high winds.
Regardless of the why, locals seem to have gotten used to it and brush it off as nothing. Personally, I don't know how I could ever get used to it, but then again, I only recently moved to the area.
