The last Friday the 13th of 2024 is upon us. Most people think it's a day of bad luck and don't want anything to do with the day. Others can't wait for it to come and get amazing tattoo deals. I'm going to get into where the origin of Friday the 13th may have come from and some of the superstitions I have seen from Texans.

FRIDAY THE 13TH ORIGIN

Where does this superstition come from? One story is that Friday the 13th is associated with Christianity. According to Time, it can be traced back to the Last Supper, where Jesus sat down with 13 guests and was crucified the next day, which is now known as Good Friday.

Some contribute Norse mythology to the origin of Friday the 13th. Loki, who is of chaos and death, is the 13th god.

Speaking of death and unlucky. The legend of more than 100 of the Knights of Templar being tortured and killed by France's King Philip IV is told happened on Friday, October 13, 1307.

HOW TO WARD OFF BAD LUCK

Growing up in the mainly Hispanic, small West Texas border town of Fabens, we have plenty of superstitions to ward off bad luck. Here are just a few to help you get through your Friday the 13th day.

  • Knock on wood: If you want to avoid a jinx, just do it!
  • Spilling salt: Spilling salt is considered to bring bad luck, throw some over your left shoulder to keep it away.
  • Avoid owls: They are said to be witches, don't hurt them, just back away slowly.
  • Ojo (Evil Eye): If you see something you envy about a person, you must touch it because if not, it will curse the person. When people compliment my hair I make them touch it so it doesn't fall out!

I do believe in superstitions but don't believe in the bad luck of Friday the 13th. I consider it a lucky day and my favorite number is even 13.
