Telltale’s The Walking Dead Returns for a Third Season This Year

It's been nearly two years since we last spent any time with Clementine in the world of Telltale Games' The Walking Dead, but the fan-favorite pre-teen may be back this year. While Telltale has been busy fleshing out the worlds of Game of Thrones, Minecraft, and exploring other areas of The Walking Dead, many of us have been wondering what will become of Clementine in the wake of The Walking Dead: Season Two's finale. Though we'd always expected Telltale would pick up the story for a third series, having no updates on the matter since 2014 left fans eagerly anticipating any bit of news on the fate of Clementine.

While the Telltale Batman game got all the headlines this past weekend at SXSW Gaming, the company's CEO Kevin Bruner divulged a bit about the third season of the developer's highly-successful Walking Dead series. According to Mashable, the wait to learn what happened to Clementine after the multiple possible endings might not be much longer.

If you did play through the second season of The Walking Dead, you might recall there were a few potential conclusions to choose from. How Telltale will move forward with the series remains to be seen, but Bruner said it will be an unexpected approach. "The way that we're dealing with and validating and retaining all those different playthroughs is really cool and unexpected and, I think, pretty innovative from the storytelling point of view," Bruner told Mashable.

Telltale also hopes to make the upcoming season more accessible to newcomers that maybe didn't play through either of the first two seasons when they began back in 2012. Keeping all the wheels in motion for longtime players while balancing the ability to come in sight unseen might be a challenge, but it's one Bruner believes Telltale is more than up to meeting.

There's also the tricky matter of bringing all those save files and choice along to the new platforms. Bruner told the site there was a new method of transferring that data Telltale wasn't quite ready to talk about yet. Given how other companies like Rockstar and Bungie have offered similar services, it's not completely outrageous to believe the process will be relatively painless. Then again, there have been some particularly notorious save file issues with Telltale games in the past, so not everything is necessarily a given.

Though no concrete release date was offered, we should expect to hear more about The Walking Dead: Season Three this summer at San Diego Comic-Con, with a premiere episode planned to drop before the end of the year. Until then, we'll just have hope our choice was the right choice for Clementine.
