One thing about Texans is we love Texas! Texas has so much history and we are always making more of it. Recent travels have had me reciting some Texas history on my trips but also had me curious for more. Even though most people in these conversations are unwilling participants, I need to keep my material fresh. In this search, I stumbled across the first town in Texas!

Nacogdoches is considered to be the oldest town in Texas. A fun fact about this historic town is that it had nine different flags instead of the six Texas had. These flags include Spanish, French, Gutierrez-Magee Rebellion, Dr. James Long Expedition, Mexican, Fredonia Rebellion, Lone Star, Confederate Stars & Bars, and last but not least, the United States of America.

Nacogdoches' earliest settlers were a local Cado tribe. This tribe was called the Nacogdoche, which is where the town got its name. The tribe came to East Texas about 800 AD. Until 1716 Nacogdoches stayed a Caddo Indian settlement. Soon the Spanish began to set up missions in the area. Around the same time, the French started to explore East Texas from Louisiana.

This city is so rich in history with plenty to do and see. Since it is the first city in Texas there are plenty of historic sites to visit. From Museums to antique shops, there are plenty of things to do for the history buffs. As long as you want to make the 7-and-a-half-hour drive from the Permian Basin or about a 2-hour flight.
