My Dilemma! Dealing With Mismatched Socks

Does anyone else's laundry pile look like this? The dreaded mismatched socks. This is one of the many reason's I HATE doing laundry!

Who? What? When? Where? Why? and how? Seriously. Who in my house wears one sock or at least only gets one to the laundry basket? What happens to it's partner? Does it get removed from a foot, never to be seen again? When will we ever see the missing sock again? Where will it turn up? I've found 'the other sock' under beds, in closets, stuffed back into a drawer, crazy places.

Why do I always have a giant pile of mismatched socks every stinking time I do laundry? And finally, how do I remedy this problem? Does anyone have a system for socks that works? If you do, pass it on because at this point I even have tiny, baby socks from my 8 month old that lose their match. lol Help!
