When I moved to Midland-Odessa from San Antonio back in January 2025, there were multiple things that made me experience some level of culture shock.  Granted, the Permian Basin is still in Texas; however, it just isn't the same as South Central Texas.

I was shocked by just how many grocery stores this region has.  Now, that may not be a big deal to the people who were born and raised here, but for me it was totally weird.

The Norm In Other Areas of Texas

Back where I'm from, H-E-B is king.  For options in San Antonio, it's either H-E-B or Walmart.  That's pretty much.  In fact, it is like this in many other areas of Texas.  We used to have Albertsons and Kroger at some point in the past, but they have since moved out of the San Antonio market.  We do have a Trader Joe's, however, there are only two locations in the entire city.

Sure, other parts of Texas have options, however not as many as Midland-Odessa.  There is just an exceedingly large number of places one could go to grab some groceries.
