West Texas has made national headlines several times in 2025.

Typically, media coverage leans more negative, but this year, a few reports have taken a positive turn.

Not too long ago, a new plant species was discovered at Big Bend National Park and now a mammoth tusk has been found in West Texas.

Rare Mammoth Tusk Found In West Texas

According to KSAT, a deer hunter found a rare mammoth tusk on a West Texas ranch, O2 Ranch, which is privately owned and located in Brewster and Presidio Counties.

Ranch Manager Will Juett was skeptical when the hunter showed a picture of the tusk. Will contacted several researchers at the Center for Big Bend Studies. They then reached out to a student at the University of Kansas specializing in environmental archeology.

Researchers went to the ranch to do an in-person investigation, and very quickly were able to verify it was an actual Mammoth tusk.

The researchers were not able to find the rest of the skeleton, so somehow the one tusk had been separated from the rest of the remains.

The Mammoth tusk was recently sent to Sul Ross University for further studies.
