Can You Legally Drive in Texas with a Dog on Your Lap?
Texans love to talk about their fur babies. If there is any time you need a good conversation starter, ask about their pets.
Oh, since you asked. My dog Nala is a half pug/half chihuahua with too much personality. She runs our household and to say our lives revolve around her is one of the truest statements.
Since she was a puppy she has always had anxiety while riding in a car. The only way to get her to relax is if I hold her in my lap while I drive. It doesn't matter who else is in the car she wants to be in MY lap.
On one trip with my diva on my lap, I passed a cop. I instantly panicked because I didn't know if driving with a dog on my lap was illegal.

Is it Illegal for Texans to Drive With a Dog In Your Lap?
According to the Fort Worth Star-Telegram, there is no statewide law prohibiting your doggo from riding on Texans' laps while driving.
Even though there isn't a law banning dogs from lying on your lap while driving, distracted driving is illegal in Texas. No need to panic if your pup is sitting still and calm but if a police officer notices your dog distracting you while you drive, you might have an issue.
What is the Penalty for Distracted Driving?
If you find yourself being pulled over because your pup was causing you to be distracted, it could cost you a pretty penny.
A first-time offender could pay from $25 to $99, but a second-time offender could pay up to $100 to $200.
Now if you cause death or serious injury to a person because of distracted driving, you could be charged with a Class A misdemeanor. This could land you a year of jail time and a fine of up to $4,000.
In my case, it is safe to say I probably won't be riding around with my pup in my lap again.
