Is Shafter Lake Near My Hometown Of Andrews Haunted?
Every town has a good ghost story. Specifically small towns here in our West Texas area and my little hometown of Andrews, TX is no different. I remember growing up, I would here little tales here and there about a place called Shafter Lake. I knew that it was somewhere outside of Andrews, and little Rebecca vowed to go there one day, 'maybe when I get older' I said.
Well I'm here to tell you that never happened. lol As I grew up, I became a little hesitant because of the stories I would hear about it. As a teen, some of my friends went to check it out, specifically at night in hopes of seeing something paranormal and yes they would always report back that there was a ghost who roamed this little, abandoned ghost town. Good, let it stay there was always my response. I was never brave enough to check out for myself to this day.
According to TexasScapes.com, Shafter Lake, which is about 8 miles NW of Andrews, was named after a man by the name of Major General William Rufus Shafter who discovered it in 1875. He was a veteran of the Civil War, Indian Wars and the Spanish-American War.
After doing a little digging, I finally found out who the ghost is that reportedly wanders Shafter. It is the namesake! According to texashauntedhouses.com, some say a lady in white wanders around the abandoned graveyard and that a Confederate troop and their horses roam around but only during a full moon. That troop is believed to be General Shafter and his men.
