How Texans Will Feel The Impact Of The Red No. 3 Ban
Not too long ago the Food and Drug Administration announced that they were thinking about banning Red No. 3 and now they have just confirmed it will happen.

WHY IS RED NO. 3 DYE DANGEROUS?
The FDA has been working on banning the dye for decades. Red No. 3 was first approved for food use in 1907 and in the 1980s the FDA found tumors in rats that were given high doses. Red No. 3 is an artificial dye made from petroleum that gives food and drinks a bright red color. The dye is still used in fruit cocktails, candy, cherries, cereals, and thousands of other foods.
Many companies in the US have already banned Red No. 3 as well as some states. The United States is far from the first place to ban Red No. 3. Japan, Australia, and countries in the European Union have long had the artificial dye banned.
STUDIES ON RED NO. 3 DYE
Aside from the horrible side effect of possibly getting cancer, there are concerns about whether artificial food dyes might affect kids' behavior. In 2011 the FDA looked at a possible link between synthetic dyes and hyperactivity in kids. The research concluded that artificial dyes are not the cause of ADHD but could help increase some symptoms. In some cases, it pushed children over the threshold to get diagnosed.
With the FDA banning the use of Red No 3 in the United States food manufacturers will have until January 15, 2027, to figure out other alternatives. Any company that makes drugs that are ingested will get another year to comply.
