People in the Midland-Odessa area are no strangers to strong winds.

Temps have been nice and warm, giving us the perfect outdoor weather. Even though the temperature could make for the perfect day, the wind always has to ruin it.

Growing Up in Windy Midland-Odessa

I grew up in Odessa and have a hundred and one stories about windy days.

I bought my first car when I was fresh out of high school and starting my journey at Odessa College. I was so excited about starting my new adventure and being able to go anywhere in my new Ford Focus.

One day I was taking my mom to run some errands and the day was windier than usual. When she went to open my passenger door, the wind caught the door and popped it out of its hinges. Being a broke college kid, we just rigged it the best we could and kept it moving.

At the time it felt like the strongest winds I had dealt with in the Permian Basin.

Fast forward 15 years and I have had the same feeling way too many times.

Strongest Winds Recorded in Midland

Considering I have lived in the Midland-Odessa area for over 26 years and before that lived in El Paso, I'm no stranger to strong winds. I was still not prepared for the highest wind gusts recorded to hit Midland.

On June 26, 2007, Weather.gov recorded the strongest wind gust at 93 mph!

That sounds like a cozy day inside to me!
