Does This Really Help Heartburn?

Uggggghhh is how I felt this morning walking into work. You ever have one of those mornings where you wake up with major heartburn? That was me this morning and with no Tums or Rolaids in sight, I just remembered my mom would always say, 'drink a Coke, it will help you burp.' lol 

I never questioned why my mother would say this, I just did it and she was always right. Belching not exactly ladylike but when a girl has heartburn, who cares! Have you ever heard of drinking a soda when you need heartburn relief? Or do you have any other remedies you can share with someone who has the occasional bout with heartburn and doesn't always have antacids around?
