Culture Shock! 8 Things That Shock People After Moving To Texas!
I'm a Texas gal born and raised and proud of it. I've traveled all over the world and I've visited many states in the great U.S. OF A. but I've never lived anywhere but the West Texas area. However, over the years I've made plenty of new friends and had immediate family members move far away to other states. Said family members seem to have settled in beautifully in their new homes and state but unfortunately the same cannot be said for those who move to Texas from other states.
8 THINGS THAT SHOCK PEOPLE AFTER MOVING TO TEXAS:
WEATHER-THE HEAT AND HUMIDITY
Not everyone is built for triple digits temperatures which is something native Texans are used to dealing with. 105 our high today? No big deal.
MOST EVERYONE HERE HAS A PERSONAL VEHICLE
In big cities, folks either can't afford a vehicle due to the cost of living or just plain prefer to bike to work or take public transportation while those of us here specifically in West Texas wouldn't dream of biking to work in Midland if we live in Odessa. The distances are too far from point A to B here.
MOSQUITOES
A nuisance for us here and also shocking for those not originally from here. Heat, humidity, and mosquitoes go hand in hand and yes we also hate them! March through around November just expect that they will be your new BFF.
HOW BIG OUR STATE TRULY IS
Visitors and transplants do not understand how on earth a drive to a popular Texas city such as Houston will take you the better part of a day! An 8-hour drive? Wow, now you understand why most of us just prefer to fly there.
THAT THERE ARE SUCH THINGS AS DRY COUNTIES
Those not familiar with Texas do not understand why it is such a big deal to sell alcohol in certain counties. FYI in case you're keeping count, there are still 5 counties in Texas completely dry.
CHIVALRY IS NOT DEAD IN TEXAS
Many non-Texans are downright shocked to see people holding the door open for others saying please and thank you, excuse me, and using their manners.
MOST TEXANS TRULY DO OWN A PAIR OF BOOTS
Texas is full of cowboys, ranchers, and farmers but surprisingly they're not the only ones who own a nice quality pair of boots! Case in point, I've got a couple of pairs that I put on for concerts or a Western-themed wedding.
THE WAY WE SPEAK SLOWLY AND WITH A SOUTHERN DRAWL
I have some friends from New York who would always comment on how Texans draw everything out. Our way of speaking is amusing for some, lots of y'alls, umms, uhs and huh? By the same token, I tell my friends to slow down and complete their words, I can barely understand what yall saying!
