Crazy Things Texas Hispanic Parents Say That Aren’t True
If you cannot tell by my name, I am a Hispanic American. Our culture stems from mixing Mexican traditions with American also being from Texas adds a little spice to that equation. We live and breathe Tex-Mex, whether it is food or our language.
If you ask me Hispanic Texans are in a whole category of their own. I grew up in a huge Latino family, my mom was one of 14 kids. I loved growing up with a bunch of cousins to run around with. My Tia's (aunts) and Tio's (uncles) had their hands full with us but found creative ways to keep us in check.

Growing up, they told us some interesting things to keep us out of trouble. With Hispanic Heritage Month upon us, I wanted to share some of the most memorable sayings. What's even crazier is it was until I was in my late 20s that I found out these weren't true.
WALKING OUTSIDE BAREFOOT
My mom scolded me if I walked outside with no shoes or socks. If I did walk outside barefoot, I would have to start taking medicine to prevent whatever sickness I just contracted from outside.
DON'T WATCH A DOG POOP
According to my Tia if you watch a dog poop you will get a stye in your eye. We always had dogs growing up, so I learned this lesson early in my childhood.
TURN OFF THE INTERIOR LIGHT
Don't you dare turn on that interior light while driving unless you want to get pulled over by the cops. All my Tio's lived by this and to be honest, most of them still do.
DROPPING A FORK ON THE FLOOR
If you dropped a fork on the floor you were getting a visitor. My mom would like to say that whatever direction the fork prongs were facing was the direction the visitor was coming from.
COVERING MIRRORS DURING A THUNDERSTORM
This was probably one of the most frightening ones. My grandma would tell us we needed to cover all the mirrors with blankets in the house during a thunderstorm because they attract lightning.
As you can tell these made for an interesting childhood. Social media helped debunk a bunch of these for me. Let's be real, I would still be yelling at my kids to turn off the lights in the car if it weren't for social media.
