For those who do not know, I moved to Midland-Odessa back in January 2025.  In January, it is still cold, so my thoughts of what the region would be like in the Summer were far from my mind.  However, time passes as it usually does, and warmer weather finally made its way to the area.  I hail from South-Central Texas, so I am accustomed to being by some kind of body of water during warmer months. A river, a lake, even the beach.  However, living in West Texas, those types of recreations aren't as easy to come by.

Waterpark In Midland-Odessa

In 1980, Water Wonderland was opened and located between Midland and Odessa.  Initially, the park saw massive success due to the excitement locals felt as they witnessed the park being constructed. Over the years, the park became a Summer staple in the area and had beloved attractions such as a wave pool, water slides, a lazy river, and even a zip line, to name a few.

Troubled Waters

Despite its popularity and escape for locals from the West Texas heat, in the 1990s, the park began experiencing financial issues.  This was mainly due to high maintenance costs and a lawsuit filed as a result of a malfunctioning ride.  The park filed for bankruptcy in 1994. However, that was only the beginning of the end, and the park continued to operate, but unfortunately, it was closed down permanently in 2003.

Post Park Closure

In the years following the closure, the park got into massive disarray.  Weeds and shrubs had taken over, wild animals seemingly moved in, and the structures were littered with graffiti.  Yet the shell of the former waterpark remained for many years, essentially turning into an eyesore.

Abandoned Water Wonderland Tours

There are several videos online showing a tour of what the park became before its destruction in 2022.  Here are a few.

Park Demolition

In 2018, the park was purchased by a third party, and any remaining structures were later fully demolished and torn down in 2022.
