Here in Texas, we have a reputation. We're a big state. Not only do we like big things, we like big love. Great love stories are born in Texas. We are a state where old-fashioned never goes out of style.

Now that the ice is melting, it's time for hearts to start thawing out. Valentine's Day is coming.  No matter how grandiose Texas Valentine's Day plans may become, they all start with candy.

Here in San Angelo, we're fortunate to have one of the best chocolate makers in the world right here.  Cowboy Up Chocolates is no doubt ready to stoke the fires of romantic passion with chocolates that are as extraordinary as your love.

National candy retailer, The Candy Store, crunches candy sales figures in all 50 states to reveal each state's favorite candy for Valentine's Day.  After a two-year absence, conversation hearts are a big favorite.

There were supply problems over the last two years. Some of them were caused by the pandemic but most of the supply issues were the result of the sale of one of the main companies that make them, Necco.

This year conversation hearts are the favorite Valentine's Day candy in 18 states.

Luckily, Texas is NOT one of them.  They are the third most popular Valentine's Day candy in our state. It's not that I have anything against conversation hearts, I just think a real Valentine's Day love affair requires something richer and more chocolatey.

Likewise, Cupid Corn, which is a Valentine-colored variation of candy corn is actually the number one Valentine candy in two states. Remind me to never fall in love in Michigan or Nebraska. I guess when a Nebraskan hears "corn", they just go crazy, even if it isn't good.

Ironically, when it comes to love, Nebraska has a lower divorce rate than Texas. Maybe, it wouldn't be a bad idea to throw some Cupid Corn into the candy mix this Valentine's Day just for good measure.

Before we get to #1 in Texas, here are a few random Valentine's Day candy facts according to The Candy Store. 47% of Americans say they will buy themselves a box of chocolates this year. During Valentine's week, 58 million pounds of chocolate are purchased.

Now the big reveal.  The number one Valentine's Day candy in Texas, according to The Candy Store, is Hershey's Kisses. Runner up is a heart-shaped box of chocolates. Third, is conversation hearts.

One piece of Valentine's Day advice from someone who's learned this lesson the hard way more than a dozen times: make your Valentine's plans early. Chances are that the romantic restaurant you want is already all booked up. The best Valentine's Day cards are already selected and safely tucked away waiting for their big moment. The roses are already reserved.

Don't be one of those last-minute Valentine's shoppers at CVS trying to find a decent card and some candy after work on Valentine's evening. Sometimes, I love to go to CVS on Valentine's evening to casually watch the desperation.

It's sad but entertaining.

Happy Valentine's Day.
