As a native-born Texan, I love and respect the slain Tejano singer Selena just like the next person. I remember the day she was plucked from this Earth like it was yesterday.  The love that people have for her is beyond measure.  So it isn't surprising that people are willing to be violent towards anyone who disrespects her or her legacy.  Oddly enough, once upon a time, I was once a radio personality in Corpus Christi, Texas.  My boss at the time was VERY clear and told me before I ever touched the microphone....

Don't EVER disrespect Selena on the radio. People will literally KILL you.

I was shocked but again, not surprised especially since Corpus Christi was where she was both born and eventually killed.

On March 31, 1995, Yolanda Saldavar gunned down Selena at a Days Inn as Selena confronted Saldavar about embezzling from her business.  After running away, Selena named her attacker and eventually passed away due to massive blood loss.  This sparked a nine-hour stand-off where Saldavar threatened to take her own life before finally surrendering to police.  She was convicted in October 1995 and sentenced to life in prison without the possibility of parole for 30 years.

Fast forward to 2025, and Ms. Saldavar's eligible parole date is fast approaching.  For months her family has been campaigning for her release all while people on social media have been very vocal on what would happen if she was released.  In recent weeks, fans of Selena have been making reels and TikToks physically threatening Ms. Saldavar with violence if the day ever comes when she is released from prison.  While some of the people doing this may be doing it for fun or the sake of social media content in a comical fashion, the threat of violence is likely very real all while being a joke to others.

Here are just a few of the many I found online...

A harmless social media joke?  Or is the threat of potential violence against Ms. Saldavar real?
