‘Straight Outta Compton’ Wins Outstanding Motion Picture at 2016 NAACP Image Awards

The record-breaking N.W.A biopic Straight Outta Compton garnered the top film trophy at this year's NAACP Images Awards taking home the hardware for Outstanding Motion Picture.

Hosted by Anthony Anderson, the 47th annual NAACP Image Awards were passed out Friday (Feb. 5) in Los Angeles. Along with the F. Gary Gray film taking the top spot for Outstanding Motion Picture, Ice Cube's son O’Shea Jackson, Jr. won the award for Outstanding Supporting Actor in a Motion Picture for his role in the film.

Straight Outta Compton, was released on August 14, 2015 and made $24.1 million on its opening day, which is the fourth biggest August opening in history. The films has since made over $200 million and is now the all-time highest domestic grossing film from a black director in the United States.

Despite the critical acclaim and massive numbers obtained at the box office, the film only received one Oscar nomination from the Academy for Best Original Screenplay.

At the Images Awards, Straight Outta Compton was up against some stiff competition including Beasts of No Nation (Netflix), Concussion starring Will Smith (Sony Pictures Entertainment), “Creed” (Warner Bros. Pictures/Metro-Goldwyn-Mayer Pictures) and “Dope” (Open Road Films).

O’Shea Jackson, Jr. was pitted against SOC co-star Corey Hawkins and veterans Chiwetel Ejiofor – The Martian (20th Century Fox), Forest Whitaker – Southpaw (The Weinstein Company) and Idris Elba – Beasts of No Nation (Netflix).
