Nicki Minaj Calls Herself the New Harriet Tubman
Nicki Minaj has been having a rough couple of days. After losing out on the No. 1 album to Travis Scott's Astroworld, and then blaming Kylie Jenner and Spotify for keeping her out of the top spot, the rapper is now comparing herself to abolitionist Harriet Tubman.
Following a tweetstorm about her Queen album, the New York rapper hopped on Twitter on Monday (Aug. 20) to make the Tubman comparison. "All the QUEENS I remember, SHOOK SHIT UP!!!!!!!! Queen of the week may go to HARRIET TUBMAN!!!!!! Had she just sat there & ate her rice, you niggaz history would’ve been a lot less triumphant. ," she tweeted.
A few hours after her original tweet and receiving backlash from many for what she said, Minaj returned and stood by her original statement. "Y’all I had no idea Harriet Tubman was now trending. I said what I said. #QueenRadio will honor her tmrw," the rapper continued. Nicki then referenced an often misattributed quote to Tubman and likened it to her fight against streaming services.
"She said she could’ve rescued more slaves had they known they were slaves. I fought for streaming services to count toward billboard when alotta niggz stayed quiet," Nicki tweeted.
TMZ also caught up with Minaj ahead of the 2018 MTV Video Music Awards and asked her if she had gone too far with the comparison. Unfazed, Nicki said, "I am the new Harriet Tubman... I'm Harriet Tubman, leave me alone."
While the "Ganja Burn" artist's Monday may have gotten off to a rough start, the night ended well for Nicki, who took home the Best Hip-Hop award at the 2018 MTV VMAs for "Chun-Li."
