Just about every corner of Texas has its version of a local culinary delicacy that outsiders just don't understand.  One of the most famous instances in Texas is the love that the people of El Paso have for Chico's Tacos.  As someone who was born and raised in San Antonio, I found it to be horrid when I tried it.  To me, it was simply NOT good, at all.  In no way is this disrespect towards Chico's; it wasn't for me, nor did I understand the allure of it.

Meanwhile in Midland-Odessa, we don't have something on par with the fanfare and passion that the people of El Paso have for Chico's, but that doesn't mean we don't have our own favorites that locals seem to go crazy for.

Why Locals Love Allsup's Burritos

When it comes to the people of Midland-Odessa (plus pretty much all of West Texas), nothing beats Allsup's famous burritos.  As an outsider, I looked at these burritos and just saw a regular gas station burrito.  However, locally it's much more than that.  In the time that I have lived here, I have heard from multiple people that the burritos from Allsup's were superior to almost anything else out here in West Texas.  Let's break down some of the reasons why.

1.) Late Night Favorite

Many Allsup's are open 24 hours.  This leaves the opportunity to pick up a burrito literally anytime of day.  Perhaps as a quick breakfast on the way to work, or a late-night fill-up after a night of drinking.

2.) Nostalgia

Many local residents of West Texas recall having Allsup's burritos as a child growing up.  This can bring up certain nostalgic memories for them.  Maybe enjoying a few burritos as their father pumped gas, or maybe an after-school treat that was both hearty and quick.

3.) Cheap

Allsup's burritos are very inexpensive.  You can grab several of them for just a few dollars.  This is ideal if someone does not have a lot of money.  Not only are they delicious, they also don't cost very much.
