Controversial West Texas Hot Takes Straight From the Source
The show Landman has recently been released, and it is supposed to show the nitty-gritty of not just the oilfield but West Texas Life. Many shows and movies portray what life out here looks like, but I believe to truly know what West Texas is like, you have to be a part of it.
I've lived in West Texas my whole life, so I'm used to the dust and wind. But even so, life out here is very different from the rest of the country, and even the rest of Texas.
I recently took a Lyft in Dallas, and the driver and I got to talking about where I'm from. He asked me a lot of questions about the Odessa/Midland area, and I could tell he was shocked by most of the things I told him. He was especially surprised by how much the oilfield influences our area and by some of the things that go along with that.
He couldn't believe that so many people lost fingers out on location and continued to work in the oilfield after the accident. He also couldn't believe how many accidents occur or how much debris is left on the roads. However, the driver did like the hometown aspect of West Texas and how everyone knows everyone. He also liked how the community comes together during times of tragedy and celebration.
After this conversation, I could understand why some of these topics would seem strange or why out-of-towners would not agree with some of our lifestyles. I know what people not from this area think of West Texas but I wanted to know what the locals thought. So I asked West Texans what their hot takes of the area are and boy did they let me know.
