Texas Unclaimed Property Surpasses $6 Billion: How To Claim Yours
The Texas Comptroller claims that over $280 million has been added to the state's unclaimed property and cash up to the end of 2021, bringing the total available to $6 billion ready to claim back in 2022.
Unclaimed property examples include abandoned bank accounts, uncashed checks, overpayments, payroll and vendor checks, unredeemed gift cards, insurance proceeds, dividends, and mineral interests.
It is also financial assets and safe deposit boxes that have been abandoned for more than one year.
To search for this unclaimed property, you can go to ClaimItTexas.org or call them at 1-800-321-2274.
You can also go to Unclaimed.org to search for any unclaimed money or property you might know or even not know about.
Even if you have checked the site before, officials say you should check it at least once a year, maybe even once every 4 months.
"We get new property every year, so it is always a good idea to take a look at our database at least once a year, so you can take a look at our database at ClaimItTexas.org," said Bryant Clayton from the state's comptroller's office.
If you are wondering, there is no fee to have your money returned to you. Just go to the site and search for your name and follow the instructions.
Officials say to set a reminder on your phone to check the Claim It Texas website either once a year or once every four months.
