If you look back, driving while intoxicated is a major problem in Midland-Odessa, Texas.  The severity is so bad, that Midland-Odessa was ranked number one in the state in terms of incidents and DUI-related accidents and fatalities.  So all-in-all, it's an enormous problem that severely endangers public safety.

This is a problem that stretches far beyond the Permian Basin.  However, one Texas city is coming up with a unique way to combat it.

According to News4SA, San Antonio police have devised a program in collaboration with M.A.D.D. (Mothers Against Drunk Driving) that offers bar-goers free rides home from the bar in an attempt to curb drunk driving.

Some people may find calling police intimidating while others may feel that arriving at their home in a police car may be a bit embarrassing if any of their neighbors happen to see them.  Luckily, such an awkward situation like that won't happen.  The free ride home from the bar will not be in a police cruiser.

Anyone who wants to partake in the joint effort simply calls a hotline where they will be asked their location, first and last name, and their vehicles information to possibly avoid their vehicle being towed away.  San Antonio Police will then set up an Uber ride to take the patrons directly home.  There would not be any deviation on location in case some people wanted to take advantage of the program.

What do you think?  Do you think the Midland and Odessa police should construct a similar program?  If they did, would you use it?  Let us know.

What Is A Day Like In Texas Prisons? A View From Both Sides Of The Bars

Have you ever wondered what life inside a Texas prison is really like? I asked friends who are correction officers and folks who have volunteered at jails. I also asked former inmates, and browsed forums and articles with current and former inmates. Put all together, it paints what I hope is a fairly accurate picture of daily prison life in Texas.
