I always joke that my Amazon driver must be tired of visiting my house every week with something new to deliver from my latest online shopping haul. I would like to blame Christmas for the influx of packages at my doorstep but it's more of a TikTok shop problem year-round.

Did you know that over 20 billion packages are delivered each year due to online shopping? That breaks down to about 60 packages per person.

Now think about how many packages don't make it to their final destination. Porch pirates stole about $12 billion in packages this past year. One in four Americans had a package stolen from their porch and if you live in an apartment your chances doubled.

SHOULD TEXANS WORRY?

Texas usually gets a bad rap when it comes to these types of studies but not in this one. The Lone Star State was actually at the tail end of the list with not many people reporting package theft. Only 5 percent of Texans reported packages stolen this past year with an average value of $100 per package. I think as a state we should take this as a win.

WORST STATES FOR PORCH PIRATES

  1. Kentucky
  2. North Dakota
  3. Nebraska
  4. Iowa
  5. Alaska

An interesting finding in the study is that the most affected states are largely rural but the states with the lowest package theft rates are among the most densely populated. The Western and Northeastern parts of the United States experience the highest rates of package theft, while the Midwest seems to be the safest.

Texans seem to have less to worry about when it comes to porch pirates. Perhaps this is when the saying, "Don't mess with Texas," comes into play.
