How Texans Can See The Upcoming Meteor Shower
I can not believe it is already the last month of the year for 2024. In most parts of the US they have been experiencing winter weather but not so much in Texas. Usually, the hotter winter months and clear skies are frowned upon during this time of year but that makes Texas the ideal state to see meteor showers.
WHEN IS THE NEXT METEOR SHOWER
Believe it or not, we are currently experiencing an active meteor shower. It started on December 2nd and will continue until December 21st. If you are a meteor enthusiast then you need to set a reminder for December 13 and 14 on your phone.
The meteor shower will be most visible on these nights around 10 pm. The meteors can be seen from any part of the sky. The moon will be nearly full around this time so the best way to see the shower is to face a direction with the moon to your back. When watching Geminids try to be away from the city lights and give your eyes time to adjust to the darkness. Even your phone will mess up your eyes adjusting to the darkness so make sure to put the phone up.
FUN FACTS
The active meteor shower is called Geminids. The meteors have a medium-slow speed so they will not have long visible trains but are bright and intensely colored. The shower can bring more than 100 meteors per hour.
You will be able to see Jupiter on December 7th. It will rise in the East around sunset and will reach its highest point in the sky around midnight.
December is a busy month for the night skies of Texas!
