As the new school year gets underway, many students will be headed eagerly back to the classroom this week, next, and in the weeks to come. Summer break is officially over this month and with it goes the summer R&R for our little ones. I miss my childhood when school didn't start until after the Labor Day holiday.
As a mother of 3, one thing that I know for certain is that our kids keep track of holidays, bad weather days and teacher in-service days throughout the school year. My kids will look over the school calendar and excitedly wait for the next 'day off from school.' They are far better at keeping track than this momma is.

This year, dozens of schools across the nation are implementing something new. In some states, students will now be able to take up to 12 mental health days.

According to CDC.gov,

About one in five teenagers in the United States have experienced a major depressive episode, or persistent feeling of sadness or hopelessness, at some point.

A mental health day will allow our children to take a day off from school to rest and recharge. In some states, students will be able to take up to 12 mental health days, which are considered similar to sick days.

IS TEXAS ONE OF THE STATES TO IMPLEMENT THE NEW MENTAL HEALTH DAYS LAW?

The answer is no. Not yet anyway. Washington, California, Nevada, and Colorado students along with a slew of other states as of this school year will be legally allowed to take these mental health days. But the new law could come to Texas soon as other states have proposed similar legislation.

Do you think mental health days are necessary for our students here in Midland-Odessa and surrounding areas?
