Texas is a lot of things, but we don't typically think of misery as one. However, according to Insider, we might want to rethink things. A recent survey revealed 50 of the most miserable cities in America.

Using census data, the report ranks cities based on:

  • % of people working
  • median household incomes
  • % of people without healthcare
  • median commute times
  • #of people living in poverty.

Texas popped up on the list 5 times. With the most shocking result placing one Texas city as the 2nd most miserable city in the entire country.

Most notably, this city is known for race issues. These problems may stem from the past since Pasadena used to be home to the Texas headquarters of the Ku Klux Klan.

#39 Harlingen

30% of residents live in poverty. Harlingen also deals with a ton of immigration issues.

#20 Huntsville, Texas

This smaller town seemed to be dedicated to housing criminals and, well, that's pretty much it. Since 1999, Texas' executions have been done exclusively out of Huntsville.

#12 Brownsville

Brownsville is always under heavy surveillance. Helicopters are constantly flying in the sky, patrolling for illegal border crossings. Because of the concerns around immigration, selling a home in this area has proven to be quite difficult for many.

The definition of 'plant city.' With only a measly 55,000 residents, officials fear that if people keep leaving, Port Arthur will fall below 50,000 population, making it ineligible for federal grants.
