The baseball world is reeling from news that Miami Marlins All-Star pitcher Jose Fernandez was killed in a boating accident today (Sept. 24). He was 24 years old. Lil Wayne has taken to social media to show his respects for the late pitching ace.

"Still in disbelief abt the Jose Fernandez news. RIP bro & my prayers go 2 the fam," Weezy wrote on Twitter.

Fernandez was on a boating outing with friends when tragedy struck. According to ESPN, the Coast Guard arrived at the scene of a boating accident off Miami Beach around 3 a.m. There, they discovered the bodies of three deceased individuals. Speed is suspected to be a factor in the crash where the boat collided with a jetty.

The two other victims have not been identified.

MLBPA executive director Tony Clark put out a statement on the passing: "We are devastated by the news that Jose Fernandez has tragically passed. Jose was a remarkable young man and a tremendously gifted athlete, who at just 24, established himself as one of the game's biggest and brightest stars. Our thoughts and prayers go out to Jose's family, friends, teammates, Miami Marlins organization and legions of fans in the United States and Latin America."

The beloved pitcher was drafted by the Marlins in 2011 and went on to become the team's star pitcher. He was named National League Rookie of the Year 2013 and is a two-time All-Star.

Fernandez recently revealed on Instagram that his girlfriend is pregnant.
