Kanye West Fights to Be Adidas Creative Director
Kanye West's deal with Adidas may give him a lot of creative control over his Yeezys, but apparently, he wants his role in the company to be even bigger. He says as much while interviewing Hood By Air founder Shayne Oliver for Interview Magazine's latest feature story.
For the conversation, which was published yesterday (Feb. 27), 'Ye spoke to Oliver about the rumored revival of HBA and the designer's new role at Helmut Lang. During their conversation, 'Ye revealed the full extent of his own Adidas ambitions.
"So it’s interesting to me when you get these situations, because, like, I’ve been fighting and struggling and arguing and talking and having conversation after conversation about being the creative director of Adidas," Kanye told Oliver during their conversation.
Since he dropped the first model of the 750 Yeezy Boost in 2015, Kanye has gone super hard on Adidas' behalf. While Kanye obviously fired off loads of controversial political tweets that could have jeopardized his commercial stock last year, Adidas CEO Kasper Rørsted made a point to say the rapper's political stance has nothing to do with the shoe brand.
"We don't sign up to all the statements he makes," Rorsted told CNBC in November 2018. "We sign up for all the creative work we jointly do, which has been extremely successful for both parties. If [West] stays away from politics, that's his choice. We've had a great relationship with him."
It's not clear whether Adidas will ever consider 'Ye for the role as creative director, but it's obvious the Yeezy founder wants the job. Read Kanye's conversation with Oliver at Interview Magazine.
