MinerTalk Call-In Show Returns with New Look Conference
MinerTalk is back for year seven, and I still get a little jolt out of saying that. If you have been with us since the beginning, you already know how this works. Once the game ends, we stay on. Salvador Montes, Zay Galindo and I start breaking down the game, then we throw it to our listeners for instant reactions.
Same show, same invitation
Jack in the Box is our title sponsor again, with 13 spots across El Paso and Las Cruces. They are the perfect go-to before or after gameday.
We have already been on a few times this football season. UTEP is not playing the same old slate in the same old league. The Mountain West is here, the teams are sharper and the Miners will have their work cut out for them.
This is not the same old schedule
The Miners are in the Mountain West for the first time after more than two decades in Conference USA. Football drew one of the toughest non-conference stretches in the country.
- Road games already at Oklahoma and Michigan
- Oregon State coming into the Sun Bowl
- Mountain West play starting October 3 at New Mexico
- Home games with Nevada and San Jose State after that
- Still having to visit North Dakota State, Air Force and Northern Illinois
I have covered enough Miner football to know what a brutal September looks like. If the Miners are able to get into Mountain West play with a bit of momentum, they could be much more competitive than before.
Basketball really did start over
The men’s basketball roster is completely rebuilt for the 2026-27 season. Not one player from last season is back. Head coach Joe Golding went into the portal, pulled guys from the Division I ranks, JUCO level and mixed in high school talent. Some are saying this is the most exciting roster on paper that Golding has coached.
