This Beloved Cat Became a Living Reminder of El Paso Radio Legend Scott Ronson
We love animals here at KLAQ, KISS-FM & 600 ESPN; whenever we lose one that’s near & dear to us, we treasure them and keep them in our hearts. There are also several incredible organizations that are dedicated to helping lost in stray animals in El Paso.
Sometimes we get a few stray cats come to the station and perhaps word has gone around in the cat world that we have folks here that love to feed them. (Yes... I am one of them).
One cat in particular was especially close to our hearts because she reminded us of one of our closest friends that is no longer with us… the one and only Scott Ronson.
This is the story of Scott Ronson's cat
When Scott Ronson was still with us, there was a stray calico cat that would hang around the building and Scott would take care of her. He would feed her & take care of her. Dubba G even told me that Scott actually named the cat "APSCA", after the American Society for the Prevention of Cruelty to Animals. Why? Well it said "American Society for the Prevention of Cruelty to Animals" on the food dish he bought but that was a long name so they settled on "APSCA".
We lost Scott in November 2014 & while Scott might be gone, you can bet he's NEVER forgotten in our hearts...

When I joined KLAQ in 2017, I was aware of Scott’s cat. I was told that she would occasionally show up around the building, but I never saw her in person. That was until 2022 when I first came in contact with her… she looked thirsty so, I grabbed some water and left outside for her. I then went next-door to the Family Dollar, bought some cat food and pour some in another bowl for her.
As I watched her eat to her heart’s delight, I went back inside and told everyone what had happened. Everyone laughed and told me “oh yeah that’s ‘Scott’s Cat’”.
From that point on we decided to give her name. A name we thought was fitting of someone who reminded us of Scott Ronson every time we saw her. Ronsena, aka…Ronnie the KLAQ Cat.

Ever since that first encounter, she became very familiar on who I was. Of course, there were several people who would feed her and take care of her; I was one of them. Ronnie became very aware on who I was and what car I was driving. She also became very aware that once she saw me, she knew it was time to eat (her loud meows were also a very clear sign that she wanted to eat).

While Ronnie never let me pet her, but she would allow me to get closer and closer to her… maybe it was a sign of trust or endearment that perhaps I was a human that Ronnie could count on for food and affection. I took it as a sign of her being comfortable with me. This would continue for many years until one tragic day…
On September 4, 2026… Ronnie the Cat would tragically pass away in the late hours of the night… just mere hours after I saw her come up to the door… a sign of her looking to be fed…and so I did. I poured food in her bowl, looked at her as she walked towards her bowl, and went inside. That would be the last time I saw Ronnie…

I would not see her when I got in my car to drive home. It wouldn’t be until the very next morning that I would learn about Ronnie’s passing…
I wasn’t working at KLAQ when Scott Ronson passed away, but I was heartbroken when I heard that one of my radio idols was gone… not just because I wouldn’t be able to hear his voice live on the air anymore, but because I knew there were people close to him who would be hurting…
The same goes for Ronnie… I’m heartbroken that I will never hear that meow again, or see her run up, asking for food and I’m heartbroken because I know I’m not the only one who loved seeing her at the station…
We will always remember Scott for the wonderful memories he left with us & we will always remember him taking care of that same cat that always reminded us of our KLAQ brother…
R.I.P. Scott & R.I.P. Ronnie…
