Lufkin Gets $150,000 To Help Spay and Neuter Pets
The City of Lufkin Animal Services has received some great news in its efforts to reduce pet overpopulation in parts of East Texas. Nearly $150,000 in grant funds will be provided to support spay-and-neuter services for dogs and cats throughout Angelina County. This grant, provided by the Texas Health and Human Services’ Public Health Region 4/5N, will allow the shelter to provide low-cost sterilization services. In addition to decreasing pet overpopulation, this will also help to lower shelter intake numbers, resulting in decreased euthanasia rates, and improving public health and animal welfare throughout the county.
What Is Public Health Region 4/5N?
Public Health Region 4/5N encompasses numerous East Texas counties, including Angelina County, where communities continue to face challenges related to stray and unaltered animal populations. The grant allows Animal Services to expand access to critical spay and neuter services to residents who may otherwise be unable to afford these services. Residents will be responsible for $25 per pet, and the remainder of the treatment will be covered by the grant.
“This funding is a tremendous opportunity to make a lasting impact on animal welfare in our community and across the region,” said Morgan Williams, Lufkin Animal Services Manager. “By increasing access to spay and neuter services, we are taking proactive steps to reduce homelessness among pets, improve public safety, and support healthier communities.”
