Is Riding in the Back of Pickup Trucks Legal in Texas? What You Need to Know
Being in my mid-thirties, this question didn't come into my head until recently. Is it legal to ride in the back of a pickup truck? I just assumed that you could.
DOES THIS REMIND YOU OF YOUR YOUNGER DAYS?
Growing up in a small town just outside El Paso we broke the rules more than we thought. I have always had a huge Latino family. My mom was one of fourteen kids my grandparents had and of course, they had kids. I was an only child and loved hanging out with my cousins. There were many days when the kids would load up in one of my Tio's trucks. All of us would fight over who would get to sit in the back while we drove to the next location.
Now that I have kids, I see this in a whole different light. Living in Midland with the oilfield traffic I would never let my kids ride in the back of a pickup. Not too long ago I saw someone doing this, making sure the mattresses they were hauling didn't fly out. That's when I started to wonder, is this legal?
IT IS LEGAL IN TEXAS TO RIDE IN THE BED OF A TRUCK?
The short answer is yes... if you are an adult. In Texas, you must be 18 years or older to ride in the back of a truck. Doing this with a minor can lead to you being fined.
The positive about finding out this is if my cousins and I piled into the bed of a truck today, we wouldn't get into trouble.
