Yes, everything is bigger in Texas - including the freeways! Most big cities have freeways of some sort. The bigger the city, the bigger the freeway, right? Well, that is true to form when it comes to the WIDEST freeway in the Lone Star State. Think an eight-laner is wide? That's nothing compared to how wide this Texas freeway is.

What does rush hour on the world's widest freeway look like? Like this! The Katy Freeway (Interstate 10) at Beltway 8 in Houston is a staggering 26 lanes across at the widest part. The ramp from Beltway 8 to the Katy Freeway is a whopping 103 feet high.

Whoa, the first time I read that I thought it was a typo. Nope, it's real and it's WIDE.

The Katy Freeway in Houston does indeed have 26 lanes, making it the world's widest highway. Broken down into 12 main lanes, the freeway has six in each direction with eight feeder lanes and six managed lanes. That's a lot of lanes coming and going.

According to fhwa.gov...

Constructed in the 1960s with three lanes per direction and two frontage lanes to accommodate approximately 80,000 vehicles per day, forty years later volumes were approaching three times those levels with chronic congestion lasting up to 11 hours a day. TxDOT completed a major five-year reconstruction of a 12-mile section of the Katy Freeway from west of SH 6 to the I-10/610 interchange in October 2008.
