There are many reasons why this town is known to be haunted, and according to this article from Austin Ghost, here are some of the reasons.

• THE JEFFERSON HOTEL

Can't be the most haunted town in Texas if your hotels are not haunted. The Jefferson Hotel is haunted by a man in a trench coat and guests say that have heard whispers.

• THE EXCELSIOR HOUSE HOTEL

The Excelsior House Hotel is the oldest hotel in Jefferson since the 1850s. Supposedly, the Excelsior House Hotel has a headless spirit on the 2nd floor. Yeah, those are reasons enough for me.

• THE GROVE HAUNTED HOUSE

If you gonna have haunted hotels in Jefferson that you probably going to have to have Haunted Houses. According to Austin Ghost...

Then there’s The Grove, a historic Victorian home that’s often called the most haunted house in the state. The former residents claimed shadow people were always walking around on the property, and would disappear upon turning on the lights.

According to Ghost of the Grove website....

  • Heavy mirrors have fallen off the wall without explanation
  • A renter who lived there once saw a little girl playing out among the flowers. When he went outside, she looked at him and disappeared.
  • Lights go on and off in the house, and the chandeliers have been known to sway

Diamond Bessis's gravesite is here and even though it says she died in 1876, all the literature says she actually died in 1877. Diamond Bessie was the name given to Bessie Moorea, a prostitute, whose murder in the woods outside Jefferson, Texas, propelled her to the level of local legend. She was killed by a single gunshot wound to the head, allegedly by her husband, Abraham Rothschild. People leave coins and trinkets on her headstone.

Jay Gould was one of the Richest men who ever lived....he was also one of the most hated men in America. Apparently, he was a greedy man who refused to donate any of his money to charity...he also supposedly put a curse on Jefferson. Whoa! And, his railroad car now sits in the TOWN he cursed!

You know the town you are visiting is HAUNTED when they have a GHOST WALK TOUR available.  The city of Jefferson offers 2 different tours. The GHOST WALK Tour is a very popular tour. It happens every Friday and Saturday night.

Here is what Mike had to say about the tour on trip advisor...

I recommend purchasing tickets online for this. Highlights of the walk: The Jefferson Hotel. Talk about a creepy hotel. The hotel owner allowed us access to the hallways and sneak peeks into some rooms. The Doll Room is where nightmares are made. He even showed us security cam videos of actual "ghosts" in the hotel and of dolls moving unexplainably. Hearing stories of all the murders in Jefferson history was also fascinating.
