Watch Hip-Hop Artist Childish Gambino Cover Garth Brooks’ Chris Gaines Song ‘Lost in You’

Childish Gambino, the hip-hop alias of multimedia superstar Donald Glover, recently dropped by a public radio station in Australia to record a cover of "Lost in You" by Garth Brooks' short-lived rock persona Chris Gaines. What reads like a hilarious trip back to 1999 makes more sense when you consider that there's no better celebrity alter-ego out there to hit Gaines' falsetto notes.

Glover recorded the song for Triple J's Like a Version video series (he's been in Australia as a headliner of the annual Splendour in the Grass Festival). Recording acts participating in the series usually select more contemporary material, with the few exceptions including the band Parcels' version of Dolly Parton's "I Will Always Love You."

The Gaines cover isn't totally random, considering how quickly nostalgia is mounting for the upcoming anniversary of the Sept. 28, 1999, release of the Brooks creation's Greatest Hits album, also known as Garth Brooks in ... The Life of Chris Gaines. "Lost in You" became a Top 5 Billboard Hot 100 single.

Twenty years later, Brooks' alter-ego serves more as a meme-ready slice of '90s irony than a source of hip-hop cover songs. Disappointing sales -- Brooks went from the 10-times platinum Sevens in 1997 to the double-platinum Gaines release just two years later -- cut short any long-term plans for the Gaines character, including the release of movie that spawned the album, The Lamb. Plus, the Gaines character faced somewhat of a musical identity crisis with "Lost in You" and other songs: He looked goth or alt-rock, sounded like an R&B crooner and could've made way more money off a country record.

Despite its rocky backstory, "Lost in You" suits Glover and his supporting cast in a way that allows it to shine as a gorgeous and tender love song. Press play above to watch his performance.
