66% of households in the United States have a pet with the most popular being a dog, followed by cats. We love our pets and in most cases, our babies are downright spoiled just like our children. This is why during these hot summer months especially in West Texas, during the heatwave which actually hit this week, with double-digit temperatures starting today at 103, we have to take care of our babies.

How do we do so? Here are a few tips to help keep your pets safe this summer.

AVOID WALKING YOUR DOG DURING THE DAY

The high for the next week or so ranges anywhere from 103 to the highest 107 next Tuesday, I would prefer not to be outdoors with this kind of heat, I doubt my doggy would be comfortable either. Early morning or early evening would be the best time to let your pets outdoors for some fresh air.

CHECK THE PAVEMENT BEFORE WALKING

Remember as a kid running around barefoot while playing outside with your friends? That initial OUCH IT'S HOT feeling you got taking your 1st step outdoors? Pet's paws are very sensitive as well. If the pavement is too hot when you touch it, it is definitely too hot for Scrappy.

LEAVE YOUR PET AT HOME

I know oftentimes it seems so easy to let your fur baby jump in the car and go along for the ride, they love it! But be conscious of what your errands are for the day. Planning a Target run? Leave your pet at home, NOT in the car! Headed to town to pick up a pizza? Chico can go along for the air-conditioned ride and pick him up a Puppachino while you're at it.

PROVIDE SHADE AND WATER FOR YOUR PETS

If you choose to have a pet outside while you do some gardening or pull some weeds in the yard, just make sure you keep their water dish outside with fresh, cold (in extreme heat iced) water and find a nice shady spot for them to relax in while you work.
