It's no surprise to anyone who grew up in Texas that we have some of the worst drivers known to mankind. What's worse is that we also have the most dangerous highway in the United States: I-45

Houstonia Magazine reported in 2021 that I-45 was the most dangerous road in America, with an average of 56.5 fatal accidents per every 100 miles it stretches. The Houston portion is, of course, the deadliest part. In 2019 alone, accidents on 1-45 in Houston claimed the lives of 73 people. I-45 has also ranked in the list of the darkest highways in the country, paired with the highest drunk driving fatalities. That's a pretty terrible combination.

There was also a reported increase in road rage incidents during the COVID-19 pandemic when the last thing we all needed was more people in the hospital. Not good.

I've driven on 1-45 many times and I'd be lying if I said I didn't freak out. All of the huge highways in Texas are a bit intimidating, especially for someone who comes from Lubbock. We complain about Loop 289 all the time, but it's nothing compared to driving in Houston. You have to keep up with everyone around you, and everyone seems to be going about 20 miles over the speed limit. It can be absolutely terrifying.

Lubbock is no stranger to fatal car accidents. We rank 2nd in the nation as of January 2022 for the highest motor vehicle death rates for a city with a population over 100,000.

Just a little reminder to stay off of your phones, stay sober, stay aware of your surroundings, drive the speed limit, and make it home safe and sound to your family.
