It is that time of year again. Students getting ready to go back to school and parents who are ready to send their kids back to school. And that means many will get out and do a little back to school shopping this weekend.

And this weekend you will be able to save at least a little bit of money because it's tax-free weekend in Texas. Of course it's not just back to school items that qualify for the sales tax holiday.

August 6-8, customers will not pay sales tax on most clothing, footwear, school supplies, and backpacks. The backpacks have to be under $100 in order to qualify for the sales tax holiday.

If you want to buy a new mask, those are tax-free as well. During Tax-Free Weekend, Texans can also purchase qualifying items online to the and over the phone according to Texas Comptroller's Office and have those be tax-free when one of the following occurs:

  • the item is both delivered, and paid for, by the customer during the exemption; or
  • the customer orders and pays for the item, and the seller accepts the order during the exemption period for immediate shipment, even if delivery is made after the exemption period ends.

A seller accepts an order when the seller has acted to fill the order for immediate shipment.

An order is filled for immediate shipment regardless of whether the shipment is delayed due to a backlog of orders or because stock is currently unavailable to, or on back order by, the seller.

One important thing to remember is that not everything listed as footwear or clothing will be tax-free. The Texas Comptroller's Office has put together a guide you can use if you want to take advantage of this weekend. Just visit their website for more information.

The State of Texas also reminds shoppers to stay home if they are sick and try to have social distancing in place while shopping.
