Legalized Sports Betting in Texas
Experts are saying that sports betting in Texas could be legalized as soon as 2023, according to cbssports.com. Even though previous efforts have failed, Democrat Beto O'Rourke has said if elected governor, he will support making mobile sports betting legal in Texas.
Sports betting is legal in a majority of areas across the country, and O’Rourke said Texas is losing out on billions of dollars in revenues going to other states, since residents are crossing state lines for casino gambling and sports betting.
Who Wants Legalized Gambling in Texas?
For over 10 years, State Sen. Carol Alvarado (D-Houston) has been pushing for casino gambling in Texas. According to NBCDFW, Alvarado has been trying to get the issue on the ballot for voters to decide since 2009. She says it would generate money and jobs for the state. Expanding gambling requires a constitutional amendment, which has to be approved by a majority of Texas voters.
In 2017, Attorney General Ken Paxton stated that wagering on Daily Fantasy Sports contests was illegal under state law. In the meantime, the provision of DFS has remained something of a grey area in Texas, according to the New York Post.
How Can Sports Betting Become Legal in Texas?
Texas sports betting is not yet legalized, although there was a big push to change the law last year. The only way to make it happen is by changing the law, and since the Texas legislative session only occurs in odd years, the next push can't happen until 2023.
