JAY-Z is continuing with the visual support for his 4:44 album. After releasing the music video for “Kill Jay Z,” the rapper has now released the “Footnotes” video -- a series of interview-based videos delving into the deeper meanings of the songs.

The latest video finds Hov and other celebrities including Chris Rock, Anthony Anderson and Trevor Noah discussing their ego.

“It’s really about the ego,” Jay said of the song. “Killing off the ego so we can have this conversation in a place of vulnerability and honesty.”

Jay added, “JAY-Z, the public persona, couldn’t have this conversation, he has to be removed. So it’s really Shawn Carter speaking to JAY-Z, and he has to convince him to move aside.”

But while the rapper wants to kill his ego, he reveals he can’t fully do it.

“Some of the things I’ve done, you needed me. You need a bit of your ego at some point.”

Although Jay was able to discuss the ego side of the song, he didn’t touch on the lyrics which made reference to his feud with Kanye West, such as, “You gave him 20 million without blinkin’ / He gave you 20 minutes on stage, f--- was he thinkin’?”

JAY-Z has previously revealed the meaning of “Kill Jay Z” when he did an interview with iHeartRadio. “The first song is called ‘Kill Jay Z’ and obviously, it’s not to be taken literal. It’s really about the ego.”
